Our Work

We are the Systems & Circuit Neuroscience Group led by Professor Michael Häusser at HKU. Our lab investigates the fundamental principles of brain function across multiple scales - from individual neurons to large-scale networks, with the goal of understanding how neural activity orchestrates behaviour. We combine experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches, and have recently expanded our research to octopuses, whose remarkable behavioural flexibility and complex nervous systems provide a unique window into brain function. Our toolkit spans all-optical interrogation of neural circuits, high-density electrophysiology with Neuropixels probes, patch-clamp recordings, and high-throughput behavioural paradigms. By studying both mice and octopuses, we aim to uncover convergent principles of neural computation and the evolution of complex nervous systems.
